The "E" in "E-learning" stands for what ? That is the main question. "Probably the most confusing aspect of this moment in the learning industry is about (yes, about...) the meaning of a single letter. What does the e in "e-learning" mean ?
You have had immediately the answer. It is about (yes about...) Electronic. But this seems to be a too simple answer.
We offer several alternatives for the e letter.
We offer several alternatives for the e letter.
e for Experience : The business drivers for e-learning are changing the character of the experience of learning in corporations. (Of course, this conclusion is true for the corporations which have implemented seriously IT e-learning solutions, perhaps in these case, the alternatives for learning would be after that natural coaching in some cases...) Valid experience of e-learning offer advantages of time-sharing, place-shifting, granularization, community support (in good web based 2.0 well oriented teams...)
e for Extended : For the organization, the e option increases a event perspective to an ongoing process. It creates a permanent link with the learner throughout his global work life.
e for Expanded : The opportunity to expand training offerings beyond the limitations of the classrooms is incredibly exciting.
This is what e learning is all about, wrote Elliott Masie, President of the Masie Center, an international think thank focused on learning and technology. The complete account of this interesting proposal is reported in the M. J. Rosenberg book "e-learning, strategies for delivering knowledge in the digital age" (a classic and non obsolete matter about the question is always possible).

Perhaps, we would add :
e for Economic : In crisis circumstances, a serious option of e-learning system is more than implausible, but a real necessity, linked with a validity control system on the ground, at random or in planned frequencies.
e for Epistemic : To our opinion, the "e-learning" strategy is always put to get a KM system which is justified to open the epistemic machinery of the organisation, that is to have better anticipations, and of course to know what is truly credible in the enormous mass of informations the system arouses. Sometimes it is a good idea to revisit the ancient epistemologists about it.
